FFMI is calculated as fat-free (lean) mass in kilograms divided by height in meters squared, often normalized to a height of 1.8m for comparison purposes. The AI estimates your body fat percentage from your photo, uses it to calculate lean mass from your weight, then computes your FFMI score.

FFMI Calculator Tool Accuracy & Limitations
Since FFMI depends on an AI-estimated body fat percentage, its accuracy inherits the same margin of error as our body fat calculator (roughly ±3–5%). Natural lifters rarely exceed an FFMI of about 25, while significantly higher scores are generally associated with performance-enhancing drug use — but this tool is not a doping test and should not be used to make claims about anyone.
The Story Behind the FFMI Calculator Tool
FFMI was formalized in a 1995 study by Kouri and colleagues, who were investigating anabolic steroid use among bodybuilders and needed a height-normalized way to compare muscularity across individuals — similar in spirit to how BMI normalizes weight for height, but built specifically around lean mass instead of total weight. It's remained in use ever since as an informal but widely-cited benchmark in strength sports.
