Your face shape is decided by four measurements: the width of your forehead, cheekbones and jaw, and the length of your face from hairline to chin. Whichever width is largest, and how sharp the jawline is, places you in one of seven shapes: oval, round, square, heart, diamond, oblong or triangle. Upload one photo and the AI takes those measurements and shows its working.
Working out your face shape by hand means a tape measure, a mirror, four measurements and a fair amount of squinting at your own hairline, which is why almost nobody does it and almost everybody guesses. This tool does the measuring from one photo. It compares the width of your forehead, cheekbones and jaw against each other, checks the length of your face against its width, reads how sharp or soft the corner of your jaw is, and puts you in one of the seven standard shapes. It also tells you which of those measurements decided it, and if your face sits between two shapes, which is common, it says so instead of forcing a clean answer. Anything promising you a hundred percent accurate face shape is selling you certainty that does not exist in a system this fuzzy.

How the Face Shape Detector Tool Works
Four measurements do all the work. The AI reads the width of your forehead at its widest point, the width across your cheekbones, and the width of your jaw just below the ears, then compares the three to find which is widest. That single comparison separates most of the shapes: a widest forehead points toward heart, widest cheekbones toward round or diamond, widest jaw toward square or triangle, and three roughly equal widths toward square or oblong. Then it measures face length from hairline to chin against the widest width, which is what separates round from oblong and oval from square. Last it reads the jawline itself, since a sharp corner and a soft curve at identical proportions give different answers. The result names the shape, the measurement that decided it, and the runner-up.
Getting the Most Accurate Result from the Face Shape Detector Tool
Hair pulled back off your face, so your hairline and the full width of your forehead are visible. Hair over the forehead is the single most common reason a face shape read goes wrong, because it hides one of the four measurements the whole classification depends on. Face the camera straight on at eye level with your head upright and not tilted, since even a small tilt changes the apparent width of the jaw. Keep a neutral expression rather than smiling, because smiling widens the cheeks and can turn an oval into a round. Even, front-facing light, nothing covering your jaw or chin, and one person in the frame.
Face Shape Detector Tool Accuracy & Limitations
Be sceptical of any tool claiming to identify your face shape with total accuracy, including the ones currently doing exactly that. The seven-shape system is a styling convention borrowed from hairdressing and makeup training, not an anatomical classification, and there is no agreed measurement threshold where an oval becomes an oblong. Plenty of faces sit genuinely between two categories, which is a fact about the categories rather than a failure of the reading. On top of that, the four measurements are all readable from a photo but all disturbed by it: a phone held slightly high shortens the face, a slight head tilt narrows one side of the jaw, hair over the forehead removes a measurement entirely, and a smile can move you a whole category. That is why this tool reports the measurement it decided on and the runner-up shape, rather than a single confident label. A result that shows its working is worth more than one that sounds certain.
The Story Behind the Face Shape Detector Tool
The seven shapes are worth knowing on their own, because most of what face shape is used for — which glasses frames suit you, which haircut balances your proportions, where to place blush — is really about which measurement is your widest and what the jawline does.

Where the seven shapes actually came from
This is not anatomy, and it is worth knowing that before you take a result too seriously. The seven-category system comes out of hairdressing and cosmetology training, where it does a genuinely useful job: it gives a stylist a fast shared vocabulary for deciding what will balance a face. Frames, fringes and blush placement all follow from which measurement is widest, so a rough category is enough to work from.
What it was never built to be is a measurement of you. There is no anatomical boundary between oval and oblong, no threshold anywhere in the literature, and no agreement between sources on whether there are six shapes, seven, eight or nine: some lists split heart from inverted triangle, others merge them. A system with no agreed number of categories cannot have exact members. If you land between two shapes, the honest reading is that you are between two shapes, and the styling advice that follows should just take both into account.
